Deciding on the purpose for your web site

The first and most important step in designing a good instructional web site is to decide on your purpose for the web site. Is the web site to introduce yourself to your students, is it to provide basic information about your courses such as syllabi and meeting times? Do you want to use your website to develop a knowledge base on the subject your are teaching, or display student papers? There are many possible purposes, but different purposes can lead you to design very different web sites and to use very different web development tools.
